ฺBack pain

Most cases of back pain are caused by muscle inflammation, prolonged sitting (commonly known as office syndrome), or improper heavy lifting. Initial relief may be achieved with hot or cold compresses, gentle stretching, or pain-relieving medication.

You may manage and monitor the symptoms with the following recommendations:

Initial Self-Care Measures

  • Pain relief with compresses: If the pain is acute or associated with inflammation (within the first 48 hours), apply a cold compress for 20 minutes at a time. Once the pain begins to improve, switch to a warm compress to help relax the muscles.
  • Adjust daily habits: Avoid slouching, lifting heavy objects improperly, or remaining in the same position for extended periods. It is recommended to change posture or move around at least once every hour.
  • Gentle stretching exercises: Light stretching or yoga poses, such as lying flat with the back against the floor or gentle seated spinal twists, may help relieve muscle tension in the back.

Warning Signs — When to See a Doctor
If the symptoms do not improve within 2 weeks, or if any of the following symptoms occur, medical evaluation is recommended:

  • Pain radiating down the leg or numbness in the feet
  • Weakness in the leg muscles or reduced walking distance
  • Problems with bladder or bowel control (such as urinary or fecal incontinence)
  • Severe back pain that interferes with sleep or does not improve with rest
